About

The skull is made of 22 bones: 8 cranial bones enclose the brain and 14 facial bones shape the face.

📍 Where it is
Top of the vertebral column, forming the head.
🧱 Structure
Flat cranial bones joined by sutures, facial bones around the eyes, nose and mouth, and the movable mandible (lower jaw).
⚙️ What it does
Protects the brain and sense organs, gives shape to the face and holds the teeth for chewing.

💡 Key facts

  • The mandible is the only skull bone that moves freely.
