About
The cerebellum coordinates movement, balance and posture so actions are smooth and accurate.
- 📍 Where it is
- Back of the skull, under the occipital lobes and behind the brainstem.
- 🧱 Structure
- Two hemispheres and a central vermis with tightly folded cortex and deep nuclei.
- ⚙️ What it does
- Balance, coordination, timing of movements and motor learning such as riding a bicycle.
💡 Key facts
- It holds more than half of the brain's neurons.
- It compares intended and actual movements.
- Alcohol affects it and causes unsteadiness.
✗ The cerebellum starts movements
✓ It fine-tunes them; the motor cortex starts them.
📒 Words to know
- coordination
- smooth working together of muscles
- vermis
- middle worm-like part
- balance
- keeping the body steady
