Tensile test of mild steel

Aim: Find E, yield strength, UTS and elongation of mild steel on a UTM.

🧪 Live simulation🧊 Real-time 3D bench⚠ Simulated values, not physical measurements

🔬 Virtual lab

Starting the lab…

📘 Theory

Mild steel shows linear elasticity, a sharp yield point with a Lüders plateau, strain hardening up to the ultimate strength, then necking and ductile fracture.

σ = F/A₀ · ε = ΔL/L₀ · E = σ/ε (elastic)

🧰 Apparatus (virtual)

  • Universal testing machine
  • Ø10 mm dog-bone specimen
  • extensometer

📝 Procedure

🎤 Viva questions

What is the 0.2 % offset yield

The stress where a line parallel to the elastic slope, offset by 0.2 % strain, cuts the curve.

Why does the engineering stress fall after UTS

The neck reduces the area but we divide by the original area.

🛡️ Safety

Virtual by default. Machine shops, CNC, presses and test rigs need instructor supervision, PPE and machine-specific safety training.
