CNC milling: circular pocket

Aim: Run a G-code program and watch the material removed.

🧪 Live simulation🧊 Real-time 3D bench⚠ Simulated values, not physical measurements

🔬 Virtual lab

Starting the lab…

📘 Theory

G-code drives the machine: G0 moves rapidly, G1 cuts in a straight line, G2/G3 cut arcs clockwise/anticlockwise with I and J giving the centre offset. The simulator removes stock wherever the tool goes below the surface.

cutting time = path length / feed rate

🧰 Apparatus (virtual)

  • CNC milling machine
  • 6 mm end mill
  • stock block

📝 Procedure

🎤 Viva questions

What is the difference between G2 and G3

Clockwise and anticlockwise arcs.

Why do we use G0 only above the work

Rapid moves through material would break the tool.

🛡️ Safety

Virtual by default. Machine shops, CNC, presses and test rigs need instructor supervision, PPE and machine-specific safety training.
