Dissolve or Not?

Objective: To predict and check which materials dissolve in water.

🧪 Virtual laboratory: these activities are simulations to watch and explore on screen. Do not try them at home; real chemicals are handled only by teachers in a school laboratory.

🧰 Virtual materials and apparatus

  • Virtual glass of water
  • Salt, sugar, sand, chalk, oil, pebble, glucose, sawdust

📐 Formulas and SI units

dissolves → spreads out and cannot be seen
does not dissolve → settles or floats

💡 Theory

Some materials, like salt and sugar, dissolve in water: their tiny particles spread out between the water particles, so we can no longer see them. Others, like sand, chalk and pebbles, do not dissolve and settle at the bottom. Oil and sawdust do not dissolve and float on top.

🪜 Guided virtual procedure

  1. Choose a material.
  2. Predict: will it dissolve?
  3. Watch the glass and see what happens.
  4. Was your prediction right?
  5. Fill a table of dissolves / does not dissolve.

📋 Observations Simulated values

✅ Result and conclusion

Sugar dissolves in water; the water stays clear but tastes sweet.

🔬 Real lab vs simulation

Real dissolving is faster in warm water and with stirring, and only a limited amount can dissolve.

⚠️ Safety

Never taste things in a science activity. Real tests are done with an adult using clean kitchen materials.

❓ Quick check

1. Which dissolves in water?

2. What happens to oil in water?

3. Where does sand go?

🏋️ Practice

EasyDoes chalk dissolve?

Answer: No

MediumHow can we get salt back from salt water?

Answer: Let the water evaporate

ChallengeName two materials that dissolve.

Answer: Salt and sugar
