📘 Chapter notes

The key ideas of this chapter, answered through the six guiding questions. Read them with your textbook.

🧠 Concept map: Angles and shapes
acuteobtusereflexangle sumquadrilateralAngles and shapes
1What am I looking at?

Answer: Types of angles and the angle properties of triangles and quadrilaterals.

2What are its main parts or ideas?

Answer: Acute, right, obtuse, straight and reflex angles; the angles of a triangle add to 180°, of a quadrilateral to 360°.

3How does it work?

Answer: Measure with a protractor and use the angle-sum property to find a missing angle.

4Why is it important?

Answer: Designers and builders use angles to make strong, accurate shapes.

5What happens if something changes?

Answer: Making one angle of a triangle bigger makes the others smaller in total.

6What should I remember for the exam?

Answer: Classify angles, triangles and quadrilaterals and find unknown angles.

🎯 Learning outcomes

  • Identify lines, line segments, rays, parallel and perpendicular lines
  • Classify angles as acute, right or obtuse
  • Describe triangles and quadrilaterals by sides and angles

Before you start: Naming flat shapes and counting sides.

📖 Explanation

A line goes on forever both ways, a ray starts at a point and goes on one way, and a line segment has two end points. Parallel lines never meet; perpendicular lines meet at a right angle.

An angle is made where two rays meet. A right angle is 90°, like the corner of a book. An acute angle is smaller than a right angle; an obtuse angle is bigger than 90° but less than 180°.

Triangles have 3 sides and quadrilaterals 4. A rectangle has 4 right angles; a square also has 4 equal sides. Some shapes have lines of symmetry: if folded, both halves match.

🇮🇳 Example from India

Railway tracks show parallel lines; a plus sign on a hospital shows perpendicular lines.

⚠️ Common mistake

✗ A longer pair of arms makes a bigger angle
✓ The size of an angle depends on the turn between the arms, not their length.

🧪 Try this activity

Make a right-angle checker by folding a paper twice. Test corners in the classroom and sort them as acute, right or obtuse.
