🎯 Learning outcomes

  • Enjoy and recite simple poems with rhythm and actions
  • Listen to read-aloud stories and predict what happens next
  • Identify rhyming words and repeated lines in poems

Before you start: Listening and rhyming words.

📖 Explanation

Poems use rhythm (a beat) and rhyme to make language musical. Many poems repeat lines so they are easy to remember. Saying a poem with actions helps us enjoy it.

When a teacher reads a story aloud, we listen to the voice, look at the pictures and imagine. Good listeners guess what will happen next and then check.

Stories and poems from India and the world teach us about people, animals, feelings and places.

🇮🇳 Example from India

An original action poem: 'Rain, rain on my red umbrella, / Tap, tap, tap like a little tabla. / Jump in a puddle, splash, splash, splash, / Run back home in a flash, flash, flash!' The rhyming words are 'splash' and 'flash'.

⚠️ Common mistake

✗ Every poem must rhyme
✓ Many poems do not rhyme; they still have rhythm, feeling and pictures in words.

🧪 Try this activity
