🎯 Learning outcomes

  • Make craft items using paper cutting, quilling, origami, clay modelling and weaving
  • Plan, measure and decorate craft work
  • Learn about traditional crafts like pottery, toy-making and bamboo work

Before you start: Simple paper and clay craft.

📖 Explanation

Origami folds paper into shapes without cutting; quilling rolls paper strips into coils to make designs; paper weaving makes mats from strips.

Clay modelling uses pinch, coil and slab methods to make pots and figures; air-dry clay can be painted. Planning means drawing a sketch, choosing materials and measuring.

India has famous toy and craft traditions: Channapatna wooden toys (Karnataka), Kondapalli toys (Andhra Pradesh), bamboo crafts of the north-east, and terracotta of West Bengal.

🇮🇳 Example from India

Channapatna toys are made from wood and coloured with natural dyes, and are known as 'toy town' crafts of Karnataka.

⚠️ Common mistake

✗ Traditional crafts are disappearing and have no future
✓ Many crafts are thriving with GI tags, online markets and new designs.
