Describe what plants need to grow
Before you start: Knowing that plants are living things.
📖 Explanation
Most plants have roots, a stem, leaves, flowers and fruits. Roots hold the plant in the soil and take in water. The stem holds the plant up and carries water to the leaves.
Leaves make food for the plant using sunlight, air and water. Flowers turn into fruits, and fruits have seeds inside that can grow into new plants.
Plants need water, sunlight, air and soil to grow. Big plants with hard woody stems are trees; small soft plants are herbs; middle-sized woody plants are shrubs; weak-stemmed plants that climb are creepers or climbers.
🇮🇳 Example from India
We eat many plant parts: carrot and radish are roots, potato is a stem, spinach is a leaf, cauliflower is a flower, and mango is a fruit.
⚠️ Common mistake
✗ Potato is a root because it grows under the soil ✓ Potato is an underground stem; it has 'eyes' (buds) from which new shoots grow.
🧪 Try this activity
Grow a moong or chana seed on wet cotton in a cup. Watch it every day for a week and draw the root and shoot as they appear.

💬 Questions and answers
1What am I looking at?
Answer: A flower that comes apart whorl by whorl.
2What are its parts? (click a part to identify it)
Answer: Sepals, petals, stamens (filament and anther) and pistil (stigma, style and ovary) on the receptacle.
3How does it work?
Answer: Pollen from the anther reaches the stigma (pollination), a pollen tube grows to the ovule (fertilisation), the ovule becomes a seed and the ovary becomes a fruit.
4Why is it important?
Answer: Flowers are how plants reproduce; this is the basis of farming, fruits and seeds.
5What happens if I change something? (use the sliders)
Answer: Take the flower apart to separate each whorl, and watch the bee carry pollen.
6What should I remember for the exam?
Answer: Stamen = male part; pistil = female part. A bisexual flower has both. After fertilisation: ovule → seed, ovary → fruit.
