🎯 Learning outcomes
- Tell the uses of water and the sources of water
- Show that air is around us and that we need it to breathe
- Save water and keep water and air clean
Before you start: Knowing that living things need water.
📖 Explanation
We use water for drinking, cooking, washing, bathing and for plants and animals. Water comes from rain, rivers, lakes, ponds, wells and taps.
Air is all around us. We cannot see it, but we can feel it as wind and see it move leaves and kites. We breathe air to stay alive.
Dirty water can make us ill, so we drink boiled or filtered water. Smoke and dust make air dirty. We should close taps, reuse water and not burn rubbish.
In Rajasthan, where rain is scarce, people store rainwater in tanks called tankas and step-wells, and use water very carefully.
✗ An empty glass has nothing inside
✓ An 'empty' glass is full of air; push it upside down into water and the air stops water from filling it.
🧪 Try this activity
Turn an empty glass upside down and push it straight into a bucket of water. Then tilt it and watch bubbles come out: that was air.
