🎯 Learning outcomes
- Read short sentences and stories aloud with understanding
- Answer who, what and where questions about a story
- Retell a story in their own words
Before you start: Blending sounds into words.
📖 Explanation
Reading comprehension means understanding what we read. As we read, we make pictures in our mind of the people, place and events.
After reading, ask: Who is in the story? What happened? Where did it happen? Answers are often in the words; sometimes we must think and guess from clues.
Retelling means telling the story again in our own words in the right order: beginning, middle and end.
Story: 'Meena has a little goat. The goat eats green grass near the river. One day it runs away. Meena looks everywhere and finds it near the temple.' Who has a goat? Meena. Where does the goat eat grass? Near the river.
✗ Reading is only saying the words aloud
✓ Reading means understanding; we should know what the words tell us.
