🎯 Learning outcomes
- Identify the rule in a repeating pattern
- Extend shape, colour and number patterns
- Make their own pattern and explain it
Before you start: Naming shapes and counting.
📖 Explanation
A pattern is something that repeats or grows by a rule. Red, blue, red, blue repeats a group of two.
To continue a pattern, find the part that repeats (the core) or the change between steps. In 2, 4, 6, 8 the numbers grow by 2 each time, so 10 comes next.
Patterns are everywhere: on sarees, tiles, in music beats and in the days of the week.
Kolam designs in Tamil Nadu repeat loops and dots in a regular pattern across the doorway.
✗ Any list of things is a pattern
✓ A pattern must follow a rule that lets you say what comes next.
🧪 Try this activity
Clap and stamp a pattern (clap, clap, stamp). Friends copy it and add three more beats.
