🎯 Learning outcomes
- Name and sort 2D shapes and 3D objects
- Count sides and corners of flat shapes
- Describe position with words like above, below, inside, left and right
Before you start: Recognising everyday objects.
📖 Explanation
Flat shapes such as a circle, triangle, square and rectangle can be drawn on paper. A triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners; a square has 4 equal sides; a rectangle has 4 sides with opposite sides equal; a circle has no corners.
Solid objects take up space. A ball is a sphere, a dice is a cube, a pipe is a cylinder, a birthday cap is a cone.
Position words tell where something is: the fan is above the table, the bag is under the bench, the pencil is inside the box.
In a rangoli at Pongal, children use circles, triangles and squares to make a pattern on the floor.
✗ A square turned on its corner becomes a different shape
✓ Turning a shape does not change it; it is still a square with 4 equal sides.
