Before you start: Local art and festivals.
📖 Explanation
Warli art (Maharashtra) uses white circles, triangles and lines on mud-coloured backgrounds to show village life and dances. Madhubani (Bihar) fills shapes with fine lines and bright colours, showing nature and myths. Gond art (Madhya Pradesh) uses dots and dashes to fill animals and trees. Pattachitra (Odisha) paints mythological stories on cloth; Kalamkari (Andhra Pradesh) uses a pen and natural dyes on fabric.
Many of these arts use natural colours from soot, turmeric, flowers and leaves.
When we create art inspired by a tradition, we learn its meaning and credit the community.
Warli paintings of the tarpa dance show people in a circle around a musician, made only of triangles and lines.
✗ Folk art styles are all the same
✓ Each style has its own motifs, colours, techniques and stories linked to its region.
