🎯 Learning outcomes
- Sing songs including patriotic and folk songs with correct pitch and rhythm
- Recognise Indian and other instruments by sound and type
- Perform group dances and rhythmic patterns
Before you start: Keeping a beat.
📖 Explanation
Songs have pitch (high and low notes) and rhythm. In Indian music, the seven basic notes are Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni (sargam).
Instruments are grouped by how they make sound: string (sitar, veena, violin), wind (flute/bansuri, shehnai), percussion (tabla, mridangam, dholak) and others like the harmonium.
Group dances need coordination: following counts (1-2-3-4), formations and expressions. Folk dances like bhangra, bihu, lavani and ghoomar show regional culture.
Students sing the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana, which takes about 52 seconds, standing still with respect.
✗ Indian classical music has no rules
✓ It has detailed systems of ragas (melodic frameworks) and talas (rhythmic cycles).
