🎯 Learning outcomes
- Write paragraphs, simple letters, notices and descriptions with a clear structure
- Plan writing with mind maps and use linking words
- Revise drafts for ideas, order and language
Before you start: Writing connected sentences.
📖 Explanation
A good paragraph has a topic sentence, supporting sentences and a closing sentence. Linking words show order and connection: first, next, then, finally, because, however, also.
An informal letter to a friend or relative has the sender's address, date, greeting ('Dear Ananya,'), body, closing ('Your loving friend,') and name. A notice is short, gives what, when, where and who, and has a heading.
Writing is a process: plan (mind map), draft, revise (improve ideas and order), edit (fix errors) and publish (final copy).
A notice: 'NOTICE — Tree Plantation Drive. Date: 5 June (World Environment Day). Time: 9 a.m. Venue: School playground. All Class 5 students must bring one sapling. — Eco Club Secretary'.
✗ The first draft is the final piece
✓ Good writers revise and edit their drafts before the final copy.
