🎯 Learning outcomes
- Read and spell words with long vowel patterns (ai, ee, oa, a-e) and consonant blends
- Recognise silent letters and common prefixes and suffixes
- Use syllables to read and spell longer words
Before you start: Short vowels and blending.
📖 Explanation
Long vowels say their names. Patterns include magic e (cake, bike, rope), vowel teams (rain, see, boat, team) and y at the end (fly, happy).
Consonant blends keep both sounds (bl in blue, st in star, spr in spring); digraphs make one sound (sh, ch, th, ph as in phone). Some letters are silent: k in knife, w in write, b in thumb.
Long words can be split into syllables (beat units): but-ter-fly, pen-cil, won-der-ful. Prefixes (un-, re-) and suffixes (-ful, -less, -ing) change meaning: happy → unhappy, care → careful.
Students reading signboards at a railway station split 'reservation' into res-er-va-tion and 'platform' into plat-form.
✗ Every letter in a word must be sounded
✓ Some letters are silent, such as the k in 'knee' and the gh in 'night'.
🧪 Try this activity
Clap the syllables in the names of classmates and Indian cities (Hy-der-a-bad, Pu-ne) and sort them by number of syllables.
