🎯 Learning outcomes
- Identify and use nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions
- Use simple present, past and future tenses correctly
- Make sentences agree in subject and verb, and use punctuation for lists and speech
Before you start: Simple sentences; is, am, are.
📖 Explanation
Parts of speech: nouns name (Ravi, river, honesty), pronouns replace nouns (he, they, it), verbs show action or being (run, is), adjectives describe nouns (tall tree), adverbs describe verbs (ran quickly), prepositions show position (on, under, between) and conjunctions join (and, but, because).
Tenses show time: present (She plays), past (She played) and future (She will play). Irregular verbs change form: go–went, eat–ate, write–wrote.
Subject and verb must agree: 'He walks', 'They walk'. Use commas in lists ('rice, dal and curd') and quotation marks for speech: "Come here," said Amma.
"Yesterday we visited the Golconda Fort. Today we are writing about it. Tomorrow we will present our project," said the class monitor.
✗ Adding -ed always makes the past tense
✓ Many verbs are irregular: go becomes went, buy becomes bought.
