Measurement and unit conversion

Generic topic

This topic comes from GayaGnan's India-wide K–12 catalog. It is not copied from, or an official chapter of, any board's textbook: check your board's syllabus for the exact chapter and depth.

🎯 Learning outcomes

  • Use standard units of length, mass and capacity
  • Convert between km, m, cm, mm; kg, g; L, mL
  • Solve problems with mixed units

Before you start: Multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000.

📖 Explanation

Length: 1 km = 1000 m, 1 m = 100 cm, 1 cm = 10 mm. Mass: 1 kg = 1000 g. Capacity: 1 L = 1000 mL.

To change a bigger unit to a smaller unit, multiply (2.5 kg = 2500 g). To change a smaller unit to a bigger unit, divide (750 cm = 7.5 m).

When adding measurements, first make the units the same: 2 m 40 cm + 85 cm = 240 cm + 85 cm = 325 cm = 3 m 25 cm.

🇮🇳 Example from India

The distance from Delhi to Agra is about 230 km, which is 2,30,000 m. A 2 L bottle of water fills eight 250 mL glasses.

⚠️ Common mistake

✗ 1 kg of cotton is lighter than 1 kg of iron
✓ Both have the same mass, 1 kg; cotton just takes up more space.

🧪 Try this activity

Use a measuring jug to find how many 250 mL cups fill a 1 L bottle and a 2 L bottle.
