🎯 Learning outcomes
- Study local occupations, crafts and services and the skills they need
- Understand how goods are produced and reach us
- Respect workers and learn about safety and fair wages
Before you start: Community helpers and occupations.
📖 Explanation
Local occupations include farming, dairying, fishing, weaving, pottery, carpentry, shopkeeping, transport, health work and teaching. Each needs skills, tools and knowledge often learnt over years.
Goods travel a chain: milk from a dairy farmer goes to a collection centre, a cooperative (like Amul) processes it and shops sell it. Many people work at each step.
Workers deserve safe conditions and fair wages; child labour is wrong and illegal. Respecting workers includes thanking them, not wasting what they make and paying fairly.
The Amul cooperative in Gujarat collects milk from lakhs of farmers twice a day, shares profits with them and sells dairy products across India.
✗ Traditional occupations need no skill
✓ Weaving, pottery and farming require deep knowledge and years of practice.
