🎯 Learning outcomes

  • Learn and use new everyday words about family, school, food and animals
  • Group words into families such as -at, -an and -ig
  • Use opposites and naming, action and describing words simply

Before you start: Phonics and blending.

📖 Explanation

Vocabulary means the words we know. We learn words by listening, reading and talking: mother, father, grandmother, teacher, desk, chalk, roti, mango.

Word families share a pattern: cat, bat, mat (-at); fan, man, can (-an); big, pig, wig (-ig). Knowing one helps us read many.

Some words name things (naming words: dog, school), some show action (action words: run, eat) and some describe (describing words: big, red, happy). Opposites have opposite meanings: big–small, hot–cold, up–down.

🇮🇳 Example from India

At a mela, children name what they see: a big balloon, a red bangle, a happy clown, a toy train going fast.

⚠️ Common mistake

✗ A long word is always harder than a short one
✓ Many long words are easy when we know their parts, like 'butterfly' (butter + fly) and 'classroom' (class + room).

🧪 Try this activity
