Identify beginning sounds, rhyming words and short vowels
Before you start: Knowing the English alphabet names.
📖 Explanation
Each letter stands for a sound. 'b' sounds /b/ as in bat; 's' sounds /s/ as in sun. Letters have names (bee, ess) and sounds (/b/, /s/).
To read a word we blend sounds: /c/ /a/ /t/ → cat. To spell a word we break it into sounds. Vowels are a, e, i, o, u; in short words they make short sounds: a in hat, e in hen, i in pin, o in pot, u in sun.
Rhyming words end with the same sound: cat, hat, mat. Some letters together make one sound: 'sh' in ship, 'ch' in chair, 'th' in thin.
🇮🇳 Example from India
Children in an Anganwadi in Tamil Nadu clap for each sound in 'pen' (/p/ /e/ /n/) and then say the whole word together.
⚠️ Common mistake
✗ The letter name and the letter sound are the same ✓ The letter 'h' is called 'aitch' but sounds /h/ as in hat.
🧪 Try this activity
Make word cards: change the first letter of 'cat' to b, h, m, r and s and read the new rhyming words.
