🧠 Concept map: Time and money
hour handminute handcalendarrupeepaisechangeTime and money
1What am I looking at?

Answer: Reading a clock and a calendar, and counting Indian coins and notes.

2What are its main parts or ideas?

Answer: A clock has an hour hand (short) and a minute hand (long); 60 minutes = 1 hour, 7 days = 1 week. ₹1 = 100 paise.

3How does it work?

Answer: Read the hour hand first, then the minutes: when the long hand is on 6 it is half past. Add coins and notes to find a total.

4Why is it important?

Answer: We plan our day with time and buy things with money.

5What happens if something changes?

Answer: When the minute hand goes once round, the hour hand moves to the next number.

6What should I remember for the exam?

Answer: Tell time to the hour, half hour and quarter hour, read dates, and make amounts and change.

🎯 Learning outcomes

  • Order daily events and use words like morning, afternoon and night
  • Read a clock to the hour and half hour
  • Name the days of the week and months of the year

Before you start: Counting up to 12.

📖 Explanation

A clock has a short hand that shows the hour and a long hand that shows minutes. When the long hand points to 12, it is o'clock; when it points to 6, it is half past.

A day has morning, afternoon, evening and night. A week has 7 days: Monday to Sunday. A year has 12 months, from January to December.

A calendar shows the dates of a month in rows of weeks.

🇮🇳 Example from India

Independence Day is on 15 August and Republic Day is on 26 January; we can find both on a calendar.

⚠️ Common mistake

✗ At 3 o'clock the long hand points to 3
✓ At o'clock times the long hand points to 12 and the short hand points to the hour.
