🎯 Learning outcomes
Draw from observation using lines, shapes and textures
Use warm and cool colours, tints and shades
Show near and far in simple landscapes (overlapping and size)
Before you start: Basic drawing and colour mixing.
📖 Explanation
Observation drawing means looking carefully at objects: their outline, proportions and details. Texture shows how things feel: rough bark, smooth glass, furry cats, using dots, lines and patterns.
Warm colours (red, orange, yellow) feel bright and energetic; cool colours (blue, green, purple) feel calm. Adding white makes a tint (lighter); adding black makes a shade (darker).
To show depth: things far away look smaller and higher on the page, nearer things overlap farther ones and have more detail.
🇮🇳 Example from India
A student draws Dal Lake with a big shikara in front and small mountains far behind, using cool blues and greens.
⚠️ Common mistake
✗ Shading means pressing hard with a pencil everywhere ✓ Shading builds gradually from light to dark following where light falls.
🧪 Try this activity
Observe a fruit or a steel tumbler under a lamp and draw it with light and dark shading.
