🎯 Learning outcomes

  • Perform basic locomotor skills: walking, running, jumping, hopping, skipping
  • Perform basic object-control skills: throwing, catching, kicking, rolling a ball
  • Move safely in space with others

Before you start: Free play.

📖 Explanation

Fundamental movement skills are the building blocks of all sports. Locomotor skills move the body from one place to another: walk, run, jump, hop on one foot, gallop and skip.

Object-control skills use a ball or object: throw underarm and overarm, catch with two hands, kick, bounce and roll.

Moving safely means looking where you go, keeping space between friends and stopping on a signal.

🇮🇳 Example from India

Children play 'Simon says' in the school ground, hopping, jumping and freezing on the teacher's whistle.

⚠️ Common mistake

✗ Children automatically learn all movements just by growing older
✓ Skills like catching and skipping improve with practice and guidance.

🧪 Try this activity

Set up a mini obstacle course: run to a cone, hop three times, jump over a rope and throw a beanbag into a bucket.
