🎯 Learning outcomes

  • Explain how animals are adapted to their habitats
  • Classify animals by what they eat and how they move
  • Describe the need to protect wildlife and endangered animals

Before you start: Animals and their homes.

📖 Explanation

Animals have special features, called adaptations, that help them live in their habitats. Camels have humps that store fat, long eyelashes and wide feet for the desert. Fish have gills to breathe in water and fins to swim. Polar animals have thick fur and fat. Birds have hollow bones and feathers for flight.

Herbivores eat plants, carnivores eat other animals and omnivores eat both. Teeth match diet: cows have flat teeth for grinding grass; tigers have sharp canines for tearing meat.

Cutting forests, hunting and pollution destroy habitats. Some animals, like the Great Indian Bustard, are endangered. National parks and sanctuaries protect them, and Project Tiger has helped tiger numbers in India grow.

🇮🇳 Example from India

The snow leopard of Ladakh has thick fur and a long, thick tail it wraps around itself for warmth in the cold mountains.

⚠️ Common mistake

✗ A whale is a fish because it lives in the sea
✓ A whale is a mammal: it breathes air with lungs and feeds its young on milk.
