3 📖 Explain

Printmaking means pressing a painted object (a stamp) onto paper or cloth to copy its shape. Leaves, cut vegetables like okra (bhindi) and potato, and even fingers make good stamps.

Repeating a print in a regular way makes a pattern, as in block-printed cloth from Rajasthan. Use a little paint, press firmly and lift straight up.

🇮🇳 Example from India

In Sanganer and Bagru in Rajasthan, artisans print cloth by hand with carved wooden blocks, repeating the same design again and again.

⚠️ Common mistake

✗ More paint makes a better print.
✓ Too much paint smudges the print; a thin, even coat shows the details clearly.

5 🏡 Real-life task

Try this at home or at school, then check the suggested answer.

Scenario You want to make the same flower design on ten greeting cards quickly. How can printmaking help?

Show a suggested answer

Make one flower stamp (for example, half a cut bhindi or a carved potato), dip it in paint and press it on every card.

🧪 Try this activity

Cut a bhindi, a potato and a lemon in half. Print them on paper in a repeating pattern, like a border for a greeting card.

6 💭 Reflect

Think, then answer in your own words. Your notes stay on this device.

Observation In the 3D scene, compare the print and the stamps. How did you know which stamp made the print?

Show a suggested answer

By matching the shape and lines: a star-shaped print comes from cut okra, a leaf print shows the leaf's veins.

Explain / create Plan a printed border pattern with a friend: choose two stamps and a repeating order.

Show a suggested answer

For example: leaf, okra, leaf, okra… in green and yellow, pressed in a straight line along the paper edge.
