➗ Multiplication and division
…
3 📖 Explain
Multiplication is quick adding of equal groups. 4 rows of 5 is 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20, written 4 × 5 = 20.
Division is sharing equally or making equal groups. 12 bananas shared by 3 children gives 4 each: 12 ÷ 3 = 4.
Multiplication and division are partners: if 3 × 4 = 12, then 12 ÷ 3 = 4 and 12 ÷ 4 = 3. Skip counting (4, 8, 12, …) helps with both.
In a school bus, seats are in rows of 3. 8 rows have 3 × 8 = 24 seats, so 24 children can sit.
✗ Sharing 12 sweets among 3 friends means each gets 3.
✓ Each friend gets 4: deal one at a time until all 12 are given. 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

Try this at home or at school, then check the suggested answer.
Scenario A packet has 6 biscuits. You buy 4 packets for a class party. How many biscuits do you have?
Show a suggested answer
4 × 6 = 24 biscuits (6 + 6 + 6 + 6).
Arrange buttons or bottle caps in rows and columns. Write the multiplication fact for each arrangement, then share them equally among family members.

Observation In the 3D scene, look at the tray of laddoos. How can rows and columns help you count faster?
Show a suggested answer
Count one row, then multiply by the number of rows: 3 rows of 4 is 3 × 4 = 12, without counting each one.
Explain / create Show a friend how 15 ÷ 3 and 3 × 5 are connected, using 15 seeds.
Show a suggested answer
Share 15 seeds into 3 equal groups: 5 in each, so 15 ÷ 3 = 5. Put the groups back together: 3 groups of 5 is 3 × 5 = 15.
